Save password til the end of FileZilla session

#1 Post by s4fz » 2019-08-19 23:53

With DUO this option essentially does not work no matter if you marked the appropriate radiobutton (to save the password). DUO still pushes for passwords and Filezilla asks fort hem 500 times per day

Dual authentication used by some organizations. When you use not just the password, but password+ comma + word "push" + install app called DUO + get notification on your phone + respond on it tapping on 3 different places on the screen and only then after your swearing your transfer starts. There exist a bug in Filezilla clearly here because it keep asking for passwords despite you clicked on the option to remember password till the end of session

That's the whole point of two-factor authentication, to be as annoying as possible.

Appreciate your black sense of humor :) but in addition to 100 times per year Filezilla updates i would appreciate this bug of being fixed

Every time a new connection is established, the client needs to authenticate with the server. If the server requires 2FA, then you need to enter the second factor. No way around this.

Am i wrong that you have not tried and have no clue about 2FA? The FZ harass with asking passwords 1000 times per day despite the Save Password in FZ was applied every time the window asking for passwords appears. The same password you have to do all the time on and on and on. THIS IS A BUG IN FZ not in any other place. FZ has to use saved password and respond on request for password automatically by itself. You have to do the password ones per session not 1000 times

I do not see my complaint was included into development or even was understood correctly.

Ones again, here is the screen with clearly marked Remember Password button which appeares many times in responds to numerous requests per session from DUO (which is 2-Factor Authentication). Filiezilla instead of responding automatically on each request from 2FA (which come after each change of directory or each request to download ) fails to do that because seems missing the password somewhere or just has a bug. As a results this screen appears and appears again and you have to type password million times per day

There is only one situation in which FileZilla forgets the remembered password: If the server has rejected an attempt to login using it. In that case it prompts you to enter the new password.

There are no rejects at all but Filezilla still manages to forget the passwords. All our users tell that

Ok. He is my possible reason for that disaster.

As you know when you initialize download of the whole folder or many files at ones the optimal strategy is to open two streams of download at the same time. And this is exactly what all sites and servers do. You see that always two downloads go at the same time.

But with 2-factor authentication for each download stream two different requests for password will be issued by two different server addresses and the user has to respond twice filling his same password two times and clicking on DUO 4 times. Since these servers are formally have different addresses the Filezilla does not understands that and in half cases gives server no respond. So every time user will try to download or upload something next time Filezilla miss with probability 50% and if you download 500 times per day you will miss for password 250 times per day and will need to fill the password for two servers 500 times and click on DUO effing 2000 times working like in a total hell

I need to configure my Linux server to use two-factor authentication.

I invoked sudo -u <ACCOUNT-name> google-authenticator -f -t -d -W -e 10 -r 3 -R 30 and it worked well.

The SFTP client WinSCP works well with this implementation but it appears that FileZilla doesn't.

I've read through this thread explaining how there are multiple server sessions, and that each needs a code from the authenticator phone app.

What I don't understand is how WinSCP is able to handle this with a single code. FileZilla works well for us (on PCs and Macs) without 2FA and I really don't want to switch.

So how can WinSCP handle 2FA?

Many thanks,
David.

Oh thank you dkingsland for WindSCP suggestion, it did not work with me before by unknown reason, but i revisited it again and it works like charm and handles 2FA perfectly. Seems Filezillas authors have clueless with the subject, aside from sometimes being mean in almost all what i have asked before. Another i'd say stupidity of Filezilla is the updates almost every day with no difference at all and many rudimentary confusing unnecessary windows, some showing files some not. It also needs permanent updates of files lists manually. This app is still a piece of work

First, reduce number of simultaneous connections in the Site Manager to 1. That will be more compatible with dual auth (and it might be the same WinSCP does). Note that one problem lies in the nature of the beast - dual auth cannot handle multiple streams well.

Second, unless you activated Nightly updates, FileZilla updates about once per month. Nowhere near "almost every day".
