"waiting for welcome message"

#1 Post by bekerz » 2008-04-28 03:02

I'm at loss. I cannot connect and I have done everything suggested except uninstalling my firewall - only because I don't know where my original CDs are. Yes, I'm new at this. But, when I disable the firewall, I can't get through at all. When the firewall is on, I get a "connection established, waiting for welcome message" and then it times out. My connection is now going directly into my modem instead of the router but that didn't change anything.

The blocked connection could be on the server side as well.

Thanks for the response. I've kept trying and am now getting the same "waiting" message when the firewall is on as I did when it was off, but I have also allowed Gateway to have access. I guess I should contact Yahoo since that's my server? I downloaded the filezilla server as well and the client, but have the server on manual. Does it not take over when I initialize it?

FZ Server is only needed if YOU want to share files for others to download/upload.

Okay, one more question. I'm still not able to connect. I did the test with filezilla and the results were that my IP address couldn't be found. So, I found out what the IP address is and when I click the Active option and put in the IP address and try to connect, that's not the address that shows in the window. It uses the same IP that it was using, but uses the port that I put in (200, coz that's what the results of the test showed). All that said, I still get the "waiting for welcome message." Now what am I doing wrong?

200? I doubt that. Maybe 200 was a response code, but surely no port. Default port is 21.

In case it looked like this: x,x,x,x,40,200 - take the first number *256 and add the second.

Where did you get the 200 from? I'm not good at guessing...

oh, sorry. When the test was complete. It was there. It said something like port 200 or 200 port. I'm not at my computer right now to tell you exactly what it said. If this doesn't help, I will respond later.

If it is something like 200 PORT command successful then it is a FTP response code, not a port number. Default port for FTP is 21 and for implicit FTPS it's 990.

Okay, I ran the test again and it showed this:
IP address (mine, which I found after I searched)
Response: 200 ok
Prep 1709
Response: 200 using port 1709 data token 808286350
Port 66,xx,xx,xx,x,xxx
Response: 200 port command succesful
List
Response: 150 opening data connection

But then when I try to connect (after clicking CANCEL, as that's the only option), the old IP address comes up which is apparently not the correct one, followed by :21 and then the message, again, "waiting for welcome message."

If that is indeed the last line displayed and the Next> button not active, the test is not completed yet. I guess it will simply disconnect after a few seconds trying to connect back to you. That means you can't use Active Mode, only Passive.

In short: You have no choice, you must use Passive mode! To save you some hassle, select Passive as connection mode and disable 'Allow fallback'.

Your alternative: Port-forward some ports in YOUR router (client-side) and enter the range in Connection-FTP-Active mode-Limit local ports used by Filezilla, then enable 'Get external IP address from the following URL' on the very same page. This will enable you to use Active mode.

If, on the other hand, you're using Passive already (look for PASV command in the logs) and it looks like 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,100,201,242) in the log, the server is not correctly configured. It must return it's external IP also (unless you connect in LAN only).

I've tried passive and active and this is what the log looks like when I ue passive:

Take note of the change when I enable the firewall - that brings up he welcome message line.
I don't see a PASV command, unless I'm not looking in the right place. I am now attempting to forward ports.
