What do you think about the Filezilla SERVER Interface GUI?
Do you think it should stay as spartanic as it is now?
Or do you want some eyecandy?
Or extra-features?
In my opinion it is a little bit errrm boring...

Unfortunately Microsoft software and the majority of commecrial software tend to prefer the other way around: A bloated flashy user interface which does nothing. Some examples are ZoneAlarm or Steam. Another big issue is Java, a lot of graphical Java programs don't use the native widgets offered by the window system, the Java VM draws everything itself. Really limits functionality.
Same applies to skinnable software, it's just useless crap, who wants to have software which looks differently than the rest of the apps?
And after all, the form follows function principle should also be applied to everything else, not only software

In my opinion, all software should be written that way, just not server but also operating systems, end-user software (like ftp clients ) or even games.Function always before form.

i agree with you mostly, but you can't really lump java in there with all the other junk. java's goal is to be crossplatform, so it has a good excuse. the other stuff just wants to look cool.botg wrote:Another big issue is Java, a lot of graphical Java programs don't use the native widgets offered by the window system, the Java VM draws everything itself. Well, java still only runs on machines which have a virtual machine. How hard would it be to tell the machine to ask the operating system to create a window, a button and so else?Aardvark Freak wrote: i agree with you mostly, but you can't really lump java in there with all the other junk. java's goal is to be crossplatform, so it has a good excuse. the other stuff just wants to look cool.
This is very well possible, take a look at the wxWidgets library. Runs on a lot of platforms, uses native widgets and in case they are not supported, it can still draw itself.
Simplicity is a plus for a server interface.
However I would be glad if the current GUI would be dropped completely and replaced with an embedded web interface instead, accessible via any browser and https. A few FTP servers have this feature.
Now THAT is what I'd consider a great step ahead for FZS!
